On Thursday 12/1/2012 board members from Mariners Trust attended a regional meeting of Supporters Direct held in Leeds.

This proved to be a very informative evening and has given us lots of food for thought. It gave us the chance to meet fellow trust board members from the likes of Doncaster, Leeds, Barnsley, Bradford, Huddersfield and Newcastle. It was very interesting to hear some of the issues and successes from these clubs.

We have added to the documents section of the website two key documents.

Firstly there is an update of the model rules for supporter’s trusts which we will be adopting.

As you can see these are very comprehensive and shows the level of professionalism we will be aspiring to.

The second document is a recommendation by supporters direct on the subject of football governance.

This is on the back of recommendations by the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee on Football Governance. This basically calls for licensing of football aimed at securing.

     a) The sustainable development of English Football and its clubs.

     b) Supporter and community engagement in the running of football clubs.

It is possible that if clubs do not adopt the recommendations they will not achieve a licence to operate. There is even talk of legislation to enforce the licensing.

We have invited both Austin Mitchell and Martin Vickers to a meeting hosted by Supporters Direct in London on February 1st which is aimed at getting MP support.

The shape of Football is certainly changing and we are convinced more than ever that having a fit and proper Supporters Trust in place is absolutely the right thing to be doing.
